Many people believe that van Gogh’s love of the color yellow was rooted in his mental disorders (and affinity for absinthe).

Absinthe is believed to have inflamed his epilepsy and bipolar disorder. Not only does high-doses of thujone, the toxin in absinthe, cause people to see in yellow, but as his epilepsy grew worse, he was treated with a medication with a side effect of seeing yellow or yellow spots.

Vincent van Gogh was born on this day in 1853.
